Background
Located in the 100-year floodplain, this area includes the Community Center, Clarksburg School, Library, DPW, two neighborhoods, a sewer pumping station, and Town Field, which also serves as an emergency shelter and escape route for students. According to climate data, the Four Corners area in Clarksburg has seen rising water levels and increased rainfall since 1980.
Once farmland with well-maintained drainage swales, the Town Field now suffers from poor maintenance and heavier rainfall, leading to frequent flooding of backyards and town property. Waterlogged fields, ponding at the Community Center, and muddy school escape routes are common after storms. The bridges providing emergency access are in disrepair, and beaver activity near Hudson Brook worsens flooding at the pumping station. Climate change is expected to intensify these issues, posing risks to local infrastructure and safety.
Since 2022, Clarksburg's MVP Committee has focused on reducing flooding and enhancing climate resilience in the Four Corners area, with key efforts aimed at improving emergency access, addressing flooding at the Senior/Community Center, and upgrading drainage at Town Field. In 2023, the town received an MVP Planning grant to assess these conditions and develop long-term solutions. Clarksburg plans to seek additional grant funding to advance the project into permitting and construction phases by 2025

The Town is working with Regenerative Design Group, landscape architects, to assess conditions at Four Corners and develop community-driven solutions for flooding, pedestrian and school safety, and recreational enhancements at the Town Field. Meg Banderra of Unpaved Trails for All has also been consulting to ensure accessibility for all individuals.
